Description
In Hong Kong, “鬼佬(Gwai Lou)/鬼妹 (Gwai Mui)”—meaning “Ghost Person”—is a slur for foreigners. Non-Chinese locals often feel isolated. Unable to connect with their international roots for being too Chinese, yet not Chinese enough to be accepted, as if they do not belong in this world, like a ghost.
Inspired by the famous Chinese folktale “The Painted Skin,” depicting a ghost hiding behind human skin, our artwork depicts a white-skinned local girl whose human skin melts away. The girl puts on a human skin of non-Chinese descent, yet in society’s eyes, she is merely a ghost, invisible.
